The live episodes do always seem off, I think for the reasons you cited, but I also think sometimes even the studio shows get bogged down in the show's increasing mythology to the point where we're now spending twenty minutes a show explaining The Clench, the Austin Stories DVD, why Howard calls Kulap 'Trish', etc.
