I've avoided Connis Willis' Blackout/All Clear precisely because it seemed like such a rethread of her previous books (I loved To Say Nothing of the Dog and Doomsday Book). The reviews on Amazon seem to echo this sentiment. I'm not completely persuaded by Tasha Robinson's mini-review. Anyone else want to chime in?

What is odd is that the original Spanish film it's based on, Alejandro AmenĂ¡bar's "Open Your Eyes", is actually very good, and the US remake is quite faithful to the original (it even has Penelope Cruz playing the same role as in the original), yet manages to be fairly mediocre.

@Brooklynrocks: But Gretchen's last name is Schwarz, not Black. Her initials are G. S., not G. B.

Sweden: Shows a helicopter flying above a destroyed, snow-covered village that looks very similar to the ending of The Thing.
