Honestly, The Princess Bride book is quite a bit better than the movie. (But then, I'm a soulless hack who thinks the movie is fine, but not mind-blowing or anything.)

Walter is brilliant in a crisis. Outside of a crisis, his arrogance and titanic self-delusion lead to inevitable mistakes. The whistling is one of the harshest, most effective ways I've seen to express this—he felt bad when the kid died, sure he did, but hey, _Walt_ didn't pull the trigger, and the problem is taken
