I felt like the writers were trying to get some emotional heft out of a relationship they never did the work of establishing. If the writers want me to care about the relationship between X and Y, show me the relationship between X and Y, don't just have X say dramatically, "He's my friend!"

I pretty much agree with everything Zach said, but I'd still probably rate it a B+. It was wheel spinning, but wheel spinning is only disappointing if you expect something else. If you've made it to season 5 of Supernatural, I figure you already know that nothing really new is going to happen…
