I sure would like to hear what BIlly Corgan has to say about this.

Slint and Robert Johnson are the only items on this inventory which are not entirely overrated.

Also noteworthy: Fat Angel by Donovan.  The song title is a cute reference to Mama Cass Elliot and the lyrics reference Jefferson Airplane. Jefferson Airplane was flattered and returned the favor by playing the song live.

I may be

When the hell is some crappy emo band going to remake WDSTF for millenials?

Peter, Paul, and Mary, "I DIg Rock and Roll Music" in which the trio name-drops and imitates The Beatles, Donovan, and the Mamas and Papas.  http://www.youtube.com/watc…

In hindsight, the Ugly Cassanova record might have been the mediocre let-down from a huge-effort that cleared the stage for a new sound that I expected "Good News…" to be.

Float On:

It is definitely China Kantner on the cover.

Ah, pedantry…

Sorry to be a pedant, but Martin Guerre was a historical person and not simply a character played by Gerard Depardieu; and The Return of Martin Guerre is a historical event and not simply a film.

That's kind of what it was, right?  Kurt Loder (pre-MTV) called it "the most mercilessly derisive raspberry ever flung at the rock by an actual participant therein."

Ike Willis is great.  And the George Duke-Underwoods-Fowlers bands of the 70s were amazing.  But nothing, nothing, beats the Mothers.  God bless Roy Estrada and Motorhead Sherwood, where ever they are.  http://www.youtube.com/watc… (watch to the end)

A few favorite FZ song titles:
"Gee, I Like Your Pants."
"Orrin Hatch on Skies"
"Variations on the Secret Carlos Santana Chord Progression"
"Damp Ankles"
"Watermelon in Easter Hay"
"My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Momma"
"Dog Breath, in the Year of the Plague"
"Peaches en Regalia"
"Black Napkins"
"City of Tiny Lights"
"When Yuppies

Also worthy: Zoot Allures and the the posthumous live album FZ OZ which was recorded around the same time.

There must be some sort of mathematical formula which could be used to calculate the gap between the reprehensibility of a person's beliefs/actions and a person's artistic output.  Nugent is gross and moronic.  But the dude can fucking play the guitar.  You have to give him that.  http://www.youtube.com/watc…

Malkmus, for sure.  Much more focused and purposeful, the musical ideas more realized.

Couldn't agree more.

Actually, Janet Weiss did play drums on this record.  The record was recorded before the Pavement tour but mastered afterwards.  She's more subdued on this record, but it's still her.

Cocktail
When I was about ten we drove 400 miles from DC to the beach in NC. A half hour into the trip the soundtrack to the movie Cocktail became stuck in the car stereo. Our options were no music or listening to "Don't Worry, Be Happy" and "Kokomo" over and over again. It was a terrible, terrible experience.
