He also barely knew Barney, thus he probably wouldn't recognize masked despair in Barney as easily as Robin would, and he probably didn't want to spend all his time with Robin talking about her ex whom sh's still really good friends with.  I agree, Nick being so incredibly stupid really came out of nowhere.

I was wondering why the guy fell into the seemingly-random-chicken coop.  At the time it seemed kind of dumb, but now it seems like a nice touch.

Yeah, and I like the way that they show a still of her from the gun range scene during the opening credits.  Wouldn't it give first-time viewers a better idea of what her character is like to show a still of her on her computer during one of her many days-off/incredibly-long-lunch-breaks?
