There is a "Doctor blows up Gallifrey" sequence in the BBC novel "The Ancestor Cell," but it's quite a bit different than the backstory referenced in the current TV series.  It's further complicated by the fact that the novel line ends with the Doctor determined to restore the then-destroyed Gallifrey to existence.

It's weird, but I think the costume is the Achilles heel in both Pratt's and Beevers' performances, but for completely different reasons.  Pratt's costume - makeup in particular - was too much for him to provide an effective performance through, whereas Beevers' much more understated makeup makes him look like a monk…
