According to the research I did for a term paper on A:TLA last semester (yuuup), a big part of the networks' rationale for the lack of strong female characters on kids' shows is the assumption that girls generally stop watching cartoons and, more significantly, stop playing with toys at an earlier age than boys do. So

I think it might depend on the size of the school, among other things. My high school was tiny, and while there were (mostly unspoken) boundaries between cliques, everyone was kind of friendly with everyone and all kinds of people showed up at parties and whatnot.

Same situation here, but with The Honeymooners.

I use "Memory of a Memory" as an introductory episode more than anything else, if only because of baby Finn's little song and dance in front of the mirror. Seriously, if you don't find that scene hilarious, I don't think we can friends.

I think FLCL probably captures it better than anything, but then again that's the whole point of the show.

What's great about AT is that it tells those kinds of stories, but makes them silly and wondrous. Like that episode where Finn wears a "Lute Suit."

Nothing beats Marceline's song from "Nightosphere," though I had the Susan Strong song stuck in my head for several months after that episode aired.

@avclub-7cbaf9384cf3835106bf2f444c0bcf65:disqus I'm pretty sure Word of God says it's a combination of genetics and spirituality/culture. I don't think they said a non-bender could ever become a bender, but rather that their children could be if they were spiritually attuned in the right way.

And now "My Shiny Teeth and Me" will be stuck in my head for the next hour or so…

Wait, they're calling it Makorra? Not Koko?

Also, *SPOILER*

I love that "Iroh/Serena Williams" is actually a thing and not just the stuff of bizarre fan fiction.

Gran Grakku?

The tree is people!

I don't think it's any big deal…

*HUGE SPOILERS*

"I came to Avatar in college and it is always great to hear how kids interact with these stories."

Even if it wasn't, I always thought the scene was meant to poke fun at the general trend in children's action shows towards constantly giving the heroes more elaborate and improbable accessories purely for the sake of always having new merchandise to sell.

I wonder if I've got the only FLCL username…

What ABOUT the eyebrows?
