The reference to Storm Troopers and Han Solo in the review is interesting - all I could think of when watching the final battle scene was of the Ewoks fending off the Storm Troopers in Return of the Jedi.
The Romans continue to fight and die pathetically, predictably, and worst of all - without tension or drama.  It's

The Romans are definitely depicted as legionaries, and are wearing a variety of armour - chain mail, leather, lorica segmentate (in leather and iron versions).  Historically, legionaries of this period - late Republic - would normally be wearing chain mail.

Have to agree with Mr. Dark.  The legionaries are fighting and dying like Storm Troopers.  Not only is this historically inaccurate, but it makes for poor drama - any fight with legionaries is boring because they will inevitably fight like drunk baboons, will inevitably fail to cooperate with each other, use their

Good point.  The Romans are all being portrayed in armour/clothing as legionaries.  Historically, Glaber commanded a local militia when he tracked down Spartacus.  I think the show should have followed this in their portrayal of the Romans- making the legionaries into Storm Troopers (can't fight, stupid, die easy) is

First - good review of an amazing episode and a strong season.
Second - Some points….
Spartacus simply isn't as strong a character this season, and almost every other character is in danger of overtaking him.  While this may be due to the change in actor, I think it's largely because the Spartacus character has lost

Harsh review.  I'd give it a B - poor acting, yes, but high points for action and originality.
Yes, originality - filmed with DSLR cameras, no CGI effects, with a modest budget, live ammo in some scenes and unprecedented use of military gear. As TJ pointed out, this is an action movie - and should be judged
