Aha, emotional maturity, that's the thing. A lot of moderately rich/upper middle people are actually deep in debt, and some care more about appearances and social cache. They can't handle a sudden change in fortunes. And that's when you hear about the former company-man dad killing his whole family, then himself.

They were building that eyesore of a house, and couldn't finish it. A ginormous unfinished custom house has absolutely no buyers, unless someone wants it for the land. Then the house will be torn down and a fuckton of materials go to the landfill because nobody believes in recycling building waste.
