Given the way Lynch's later efforts such as Mulholland Drive and Inland Empire became increasingly self-aware and self-referential, with fictional worlds overlapping and leaking into the real world, I wonder if the intent was to go in a similar direction for Twin Peaks.

What makes it a joke is that you're able to take your specific experience and make it universal.

I knew he reminded me of someone! I love how everybody on that flight seemed to have an improbable and thematically resonant backstory, except for the two leads who are given no backstory at all!

Was that the first line of dialogue he has in the film? Must come a good twenty minutes into the film.

I know, but it made for one of the most genuinely funny and goofy moments in the film. It felt like an old school Woody Allen joke.
