Very well put. I wasn't alive when any of these albums came out (but those big 3 are the only ones I listen to regularly), so I always assumed he just ended up taking the easy way out and made conventional pop albums instead of taking risks that always ended with critical panning.
I always cite "Monkberry Moon Delight" as the McCartney track that shows he was not only as experimental as John, he had the focus to pull it off with better results. Ya I went to Orono too. I lived in a huge party house my senior year (that you've probably been to) and we'd get townies just showing up here and there. The dudes that immediately want to fight you are the worst.
