I think the people who hate it tend to be turned off by the fact that it sounds so "written,"which it does, and the people who like it (like me) overlook the artifice in favor of the message, which really captures the self loathing tendency of NYC during its dark times.

Godzilla, broadcast on "Creature Features" on Channel 5 in NYC, mid 1970s. I was probably 5-6 years old and it's still one of my most powerful movie experiences.
There's something especially creepy about getting an industry hack to collaborate with you on the song about your dead son. Can't say I'm too impressed with Captain Underpants here, but at least he did pick an appropriate song to hate.

Abrams is the new King of Giving People What They Want, which means that his films will be hugely popular at the moment they are introduced, and within a decade they are completely forgotten. Honestly, are there any Abrams films that will have any staying power at all?

In some senses yes, but committing for life is heavy lifting regardless of when you start. In some ways getting some of the harder parts (like having young kids) out of the way when you're in better physical shape and more idealistic makes it a bit easier as you limp into middle age.
