I couldn't figure out Good Charlotte at all.  They had these highly personal-history songs that were just boring, which isn't surprising because they grew up in Waldorf/LaPlata Maryland, which is really boring.

I haven't heard other versions, but the Pogues' version is one of the best anti-war songs of all mainly because of the unhurried way he tells his story.  It's like the poor bastard has nothing to do but lament the injustices of war and plenty of time to do it.
