I think Joe Queenan did a book or series of articles years ago about that phenomenon. There seems to be a particular category of entertainer where suddenly, almost overnight, we collectively decide we hate. Michael Keaton was his example at the time, which he found baffling.
It's a one-day thing. Believe me, Chick-fil-A is *not* happy that eating at their restaurant has become a political act.

When I saw the original in the theater at the time, I was impressed that it was a lot better than I'd expected it to be. The book is 95% about that stuff: spy plane development, above-ground nuclear tests, the political maneuverings to create it, turf wars to control it, etc. I think the crazy stuff is sort of tacked on at the end, though I didn't make it that far myself.
