I had the same issue with this. I always find the American use of "New Wave" odd, it seems to cover everything from PiL and Two Tone ska to mainstream fare like Duran Duran and Culture Club. There's nothing wrong with the PtMM version of Can't Hardly Wait -it's one of their best tracks - until you hear the Tim version. The jettisoning of the over production, and the replacement(!) of the horns in favour of that squiggly, nagging guitar riff makes it just better. It can't be unheard..
