Basically, the black costume, while very cool, was an attempt to change the identity of the character so when Ditko claimed he created the look of Spiderman Marvel could counter with "well he doesn't look that way anymore" in the courts.

Concur. Stan gave the company a very likeable public face, one that DC did not have. He may have got full of himself for much of the 70's, but he has spent much of the last 20-30 years praising his co-creators.

I read that McBain book. Hard liquor, hard men, and hot women, IIRC. The main character was a good guy hung-up on his cheating ex-wife who you get frustrated with, out right annoyed with, but you can really root for him.
