I read that McBain book. Hard liquor, hard men, and hot women, IIRC. The main character was a good guy hung-up on his cheating ex-wife who you get frustrated with, out right annoyed with, but you can really root for him.

I really like the Snopes trilogy, beginning with The Hamlet. It's very pastoral and episodic with many funny incidents.
