Love this band, love this album. John Reis's new(-ly defunct?) act The Night Marchers also put out a great album this year called Allez Allez.
@avclub-52883377da5367bc9205062d52c08dbc:disqus I understand the context Conrad wrote in (no text like it) as well as the attitudes of his day, and it's not as though I'm running screaming from his books. Hell, "n*gger" probably wasn't even a derogatory term for him. But while I'm aware that he was a progressive man…
@avclub-4602fc349ffc0ad649190e937f2a5f14:disqus true enough… Except for Mark Twain.
Me F#!%ing too!
I didn't actually know this until recently, but apparently Wehrmacht soldiers in The Second World War were issued methamphetamine tablets. The British newspapers reported that the Germans had a "miracle pill" and German soldiers dubbed them "Panzerschokolade" (tank chocolate).
So, yeah. Nazis on meth.
Not a big fan of the book's structure actually. The shifting POV at the very beginning (why?), the draggy pace, and I hate to say it but sometimes I feel like Conrad needs to put away the purple crayons. I'm not finished it yet but I do feel like it's a bloated novel and the back half should have been shaved off. Just…

The funny thing is, as a man who travelled the world, Conrad is capable of respecting other cultures - I remember Outpost and Darkness being quite critical of European arrogance. At the same time he has these odd moments of cognitive dissonance; he'll be expressing admiration for Islam in one chapter and referring to…
Haven't read that one, no. I guess the title isn't meant to be ironic like I'd hoped.

Is The Third Reich any good? It sounded interesting, and I enjoy Bolano when he's focused, but less so when he gets on a post-modern style "long march to nowhere."
@avclub-3be42d8a3412057f79af152555e39bd4:disqus just wondering, have you ever heard of Not Wanted On The Voyage by Timothy Findlay? Might make a great follow-up.
Just finishing up Lord Jim, having finally gotten around to it at last. It's been a long time since I read anything by Joseph Conrad, but I'm a bit surprised at some of the racial condescension in the book, coming from the man who wrote Heart of Darkness and An Outpost of Progress.
I don't know if there's enough in a typical Banana Guard's day to sustain an episode, though. It would probably just go like:
- morning coffee
- find a hallway to stand in with your spear for a while
- pull Cinnamon Bun out of a fountain he's fallen into
- lunch time
- staring contest with another guard
- nap time
- Princess…
I don't think it was that dark, really. I mean it's not like we witnessed someone screaming in horror while they were eaten alive by their brother or anything.
