You're right about the last two being heavy but Boogie Nights, Punch-Drunk Love and even Magnolia are pretty rife with humor, in between the addiction and death.

If you're a fan of this wonderful man and you haven't seen Love Liza, watch it now. Super dark and depressing, but PSH somehow delivers an incredibly funny, disturbed performance. Truly one of the greats.

I think Looking WILL attract viewers. Saying that viewers "already have Girls" suggests that the two shows are interchangeable, and they're clearly not. Being a young gay male is not very comparable to being a young straight female.
