Search For Spock is really low budget, and you can tell. All the stuff on that planet looks like it was shot on a cheap sound stage, because it was.

This is why the movies have usually sucked.
To make a big budget film about Trek you need to make it more like, well Star Wars. 
Normal people ain't going to sit through a two hour version of what the usual Trek episode is. They tried this with The Motion Picture, and had to prod audiences awake with a stick at the end…
