I found the voiceover interesting in the context of this TEDxIslay (Deaf TED, basically) talk on the "Deaf Lens". The whole thing is interesting, but this link starts at the moment where he talks about how you would have an ASL voiceover, essentially http://youtu.be/ocbyS9-3jjM…

I am curious, but I also sort of tired if every relationship on this show being Deaf/hearing—in part because it means a lot of SimCom (signing while talking, which is actually truly awful ASL) and in part because it's just not true to life. That Gabe sort of seemed like a putz.

Kansas! This is Kansas! Not all states in the middle of the country are the same and people would have much more interesting accents if this was Kentucky.

To be fair, a good 70% of the lip-reading on this show is completely implausible.

I think the show is doing a good job of showing the flaws in which Daphne and Bay are handling their alliance/apathy about Carlton, but I do wish they were doing a better job of what you articulated—for Deaf students, an all-Deal school is the only option they have to learn and grow in an environment that suits their

Yea, I'd have LOVED to see the family in an ASL class (especially because that could have been a great way to exposition some Deaf culture info to viewers without being overly heavy-handed). Ah well.

"There are likely a thousand reasons this doesn’t really make sense as a budgetary decision (forcing the district to hire more interpreters throughout the district to now accommodate the deaf kids in a hearing environment seems short-sighted, to say the least)"

That's awesome!

@avclub-0840875a9da6f24c4e0fc883b399d93a:disqus Oh! Sorry I think I just got what you were referring to—Daphne wasn't messing up her lines when Katherine corrected her, she just wasn't putting my feeling or passion behind them. She was basically just doing a rote line reading and Katherine wanted her to actually act.

@avclub-0840875a9da6f24c4e0fc883b399d93a:disqus But she was signing the actual lines? At least as far as I could tell. I see what you're saying, but that's sort of why Katherine is actually a terrible choice for director of a Deaf play, since a fluent signed would have known what mistakes Daphne was making and

"Are there actual ASL signs for some of the Shakespearean words?"

The interpreter was reading the lines—this is really common for ASL Plays/Deaf Theater so that hearing family members can come. The reason it isn't a direct translation is, in part, because ASL grammar differs from English, so a direct translation of what Daphne was saying would only come out sounding really weird.

But if you're deaf from birth—like the majority of deaf people—what's it a loss of? You've only ever been deaf, you haven't lost anything. That's like arguing that since it's easier to be white (or male or straight), any person not born those things has lost something.

@avclub-ca94d6e1a824e303bc93a05dc947498e:disqus Although it depends a great deal on education background, yes, many native ASL users have issues with reading and writing English because the grammar is different. That's not universal and often depends on the background—deaf kids of deaf parents (like Emmett) tend to do

They also seem to have a class together, based off the first episode of Bay at Carlton, so it's extra weird that they don't seem to acknowledge each other much. Maybe Daphne hangs out with Emmett too much?

Good guess, but not really. ASL and English have different grammar structures, so when you speak while signing (using English grammar) you're actually before MORE confusing for someone who's native language is ASL. Additionally, most of the hearing characters (like Bay) speak and only sign occasional words (often

Yea I want to boo whenever they show her. She can be hearing, but why doe every hearing person on this show have to talk while signing? Can't they spread the message that that's actually TERRIBLE ASL?

I'm not arguing that Emmett deserves better, but I actually liked that the show avoided Emmet falling into the "nice guy" trap by staying friends with Bay despite his feelings because she might, eventually, want to date him again. It's best not to teach the impressionable teens watching the show that that's the best

I do like that they've expanded Regina's carpal tunnel storyline, but…you can totally sign one handed. There are deaf amputees who do it all the time. Also, that's (one of the ways) deaf people talk and drive (or use video chat on their one). It's great that their continuing it, but it's also inaccurate if her issue
