    I have completely blocked this plot point from my memory. When were Rick & Co attacked by the farm? Who is Randall? Who were these "hostile survivors"? Why did I forget my coffee mug for work today??? (That last question may explain the prior ones.)

    I, too, assumed poison, but the breakfast scene makes that less likely. I like your theory. It makes the tanks full of heads less creepy (they serve a purpose), but it makes the governor as a character more creepy (why look at them?).
