Something I noticed
Walt was basically in limbo this episode. He didn't want to go back to teaching, but he had seemingly accepted giving up his drug kingpin lifestyle. So he found solace in busy work like the hot-water heater and the floorboards.
Maybe it was less ironic, but the TV on the Radio song at the end was pretty damn powerful too.

Well if there was a need to affect a character or persuade them to do something with Boone or Pickett or some douche bag from the Freighter Commandos, I think Smokey could do that.

Another reason that I think it can only read the minds of the dead is because of what kind of memories it presented to Ben at the end of "Dead is Dead". It didn't show every evil thing that Ben did, it just showed memories that related to Alex and one's where Alex was always present.
