Here's what I think was up with that scene. I think Walt at first thought she might be hitting on him, but really she was just showing him pity, which he doesn't want. He is able to keep his mouth shut there, but when Gretchen shows him pity later, he gives her the old "Fuck you."

That was a great line. It works on soooo many levels
