My suspicion is that they knew they didn't want to do any more MU episodes, so they used Rom in particular in Emperor's New Cloak to point out as much ridiculousness as they possibly could in the whole concept, and then let it die.

I suppose this brings up different types of dying support characters, like "origin story" characters who had to die to set up the main characters into the places they need to be to start the story, versus characters that are brought into an ongoing story with no other purpose than to die to motivate the existing…
