Frank Miller's art in the mini-series was phenomenal at portraying bodies in action, but looking back, it's almost a little aggravating how often he'd just leave entire backgrounds blank (or with some rudimentary skyline.) Contrast that with Paul Smith's insanely detailed apartments, hospitals and rooftops in X-Men

@avclub-08ae6a26b7cb089ea588e94aed36bd15:disqus , Magneto (and presumably by extension, Quicksilver) is Jewish.

Unrelated to the titles mentioned above, I recently borrowed a friend's copy of "The Art of Howard Chaykin" hardcover. The art is, obviously, amazing, and the bio of Chaykin is enlightening (though it could've used a better editor.) But an unexpected gem of the book so far is Brian Michael Bendis' introduction. He

"Sleeper" is Brubaker/Phillips' masterpiece*. Their half-dozen or so original characters outshine the ones taken from the existing Wildstorm universe, and Brubaker uses his hero's physical disconnect from humanity as a perfect metaphor for his corresponding psychological removal from humanity as he sinks deeper into

I like the idea of the album a lot more than I like the actual music. It's all very well crafted, and has a nice human (robot?) touch, but it's almost aggressively… I dunno, basic. It feels like Daft Punk wanted to pay homage to all of their 70s musical/technical influences, but they ended up doing do to a fault,

So… so y… you're saying…

On an animated superhero note, the "trailer" for the new Avengers cartoon is making the rounds today. It's… not encouraging, but you never know. Trailers are often misleading, so hopefully it'll be pretty good.

I cannot imagine being an eight-year-old kid and trying to comprehend the last ten minutes of that movie.

There's something about "A Bridge Too Far" that just doesn't really come together for me. I like almost every individual thing about it, but it's an odd result: its whole is not equal to the sum of its parts.

That's gonna be tough. And who do you cast as the female lead? Surely no one can compete with Adjani, so let's just go with the bland skinny blonde du jour.

I wish someone would remake this while simultaneously ripping off the soundtrack and visual aesthetic of "To Live And Die In L.A."

Is anyone else a little creeped out by how much the truncated slang made popular (damn near necessary) over on Twitter has in common with Orwellian dialect?

[dismissively] I'm aware of his work.

Oh how I love Bullwinkle!

"Frailty"  is one of the worst movies I've ever seen, almost entirely because of its final ten minutes.

Fuck it, I'm
just gonna keep pretending the entire gang died at the end of the fifth
season while saving the world from an other-dimensional invasion by a
demon-god. (that worked really well the other time I tried it)

I like a good fart joke, and the idea of skillfully editing in farts to one of the most self-serious dramas on tv sounds right up my alley. Somewhere out there is a person capable of adding fart noises to "Downton" scenes with the timing and nuance of the classic "laugh track on The Wire" clip.

Yeah.

If you're talking about the new(er) wave of film critics who like to point out the virtues of Michael Bay as if they even come close to making up for his faults, then yes, "Miami Vice" is essential. But that doesn't make it any good.

Matt Weiner: "OK, so what's the most saccharine, shamelessly optimistic song in the universe?"
