For what it's worth: I'm not a Tinder user (Do they even have options for gay men?), but the husband and I sometimes use Grindr to keep things fun. I don't hook up with people from it that often, and almost never on the first night we speak. I want to know someone's personality, to make more sure of my…
Today's Broadway, alas, is not a great home for eccentric performing talents. Borle's doing a lot better than some other oddball/brilliant actors (the criminally underused Mary Testa comes to mind), but I still think that in another era he'd be an even bigger star.
Sprechstimme FTW.
I dearly love the theatre, but I somehow think that turning THE HUNGER GAMES into a massive live spectacle will more reproduce the "obscenely wealthy people watch suffering to get their kicks" dynamic than satirize it. Especially if this ends up as some sort of arena tour rather than a regular Broadway show, which is…
Courtroom dramas seems like a strong fit for live TV, and non-musical plays adapted for live TV are a welcome throwback to the medium's early years. I'd be all for this becoming a trend, especially if they start working with more contemporary plays.
Well yes, that would be lovely, too. Still a good step, though.
I'm weirdly grateful that we've progressed to the point that gay coming-of-age stories are common enough that "not enough histrionics" is a valid criticism. Maybe a harbinger of a time when LGBT adolescence is no more traumatic than straight adolescence?
Man, between this and HOUSEBOUND, it's "disappointing third act" day here at the AV Club.
In addition to it being a really fun song and video, I also appreciate the fact that it is dedicated to the memory of Molly Glynn. She was an actress here in Chicago who helped with casting on this video, and she was killed in a freak accident three weeks ago.
My understanding is that he's been in the situation for a while, so he may be remembering the disgustingness of the older men front he perspective of his 19-year-old self.
For the commercial co-producers to pull the producing rights from the non-profit theatre doing it a few months before the opening (and after a ton of publicity) is not common, and SUPER-shady. Unless they've managed to hire Christian Bale to star again, moving straight to Broadway with a show like that, with no…
Very, very true.
What a shame. Kevin Kline as an aging Errol Flynn is a fantastic idea for a movie. Too bad they blew it.
One wishes it were possible, though, just to avoid the many hopelessly generic/repetitive titles out there.
He still does a pretty good amount of stage work, usually to great success. (He did a revival of CYRANO DE BERGERAC a few years back which was filmed for PBS, and its as tasty an old-fashioned star turn as you can find these days.)
I imagine that some of them were just wealthy people who chose to get the tickets just because they were hugely expensive and sought-after.
As do I.
Words cannot express my jealousy of the people who are getting to see this.
From the Guardian liveblog (yes, I read the whole thing, shut up), that was just a rumor, and didn't happen.
