I definitely think that most of the violence in Preacher is gratuitous, and that many of the characters are written generically. But the story is great, and the central characters are great, and it's incredibly entertaining throughout.

I think he started adding his name to titles to differentiate his movies from other films. The Thing was a remake, and Vampires is a generic enough title that it could have led to confusion in video stores.

Agreed, with reservations. I thought the last act was batshit enough to at provide a form of payoff. Unfortunately, that payoff was not as great as the first 2/3 promised, but it was at least entertaining enough. I think its a movie to appreciate more than to love or to remain in awe of.
