Part of me hopes this is a hoax, and the anti-penultimate episode has Pierce making an Angus T. Jones-style video saying that the group is "filth," and beneath him, only to return in the finale.

He's not great, but I think he is far better now than he was even a couple episodes ago.  I think having him walking into every scene with a jokey/kinda-witty comment didn't help.  Hopefully having Barrowman to play off of instead of just going after Laurel and popping in on Oliver will give him more to do
