Yeah I have no idea what that even means. It's the most ham-fisted insult since Richard Stark's Parker, the graphic novel adaptation.
It does seem like an odd aside when you think about it. What does this movie have to do with Pacific Rim, other than a critic's vague, uninformed sense that the two movies are related? One is a fantasy/SF movie about giant robots fighting monsters, and the other is a realistic thriller set in space starring literally…
You should keep in mind that trailers are not cut together by the filmmaker but by the production company. I read a different review that mentions the complete lack of sound in the movie for huge long stretches, including in some of the disaster scenes. Dowd's is the first review I've seen that even mentions the score.
Why do you think Tobias ran to The Dissolve?
You have to remember that AV Club grades on a curve. Add two letter grades up for every review they hand out. Especially filmfest reviews, where Dowd had about 10 minutes to write the review while standing in line for the next film.
Nice. Gravity got a B- and 12 Years a Slave got an A-. In AV Club terms, that means Gravity will get an A+ from me and 12 Years a Slave will become my favorite movie of all time.
Never read him. So fuck him.
The inverse of hatred.
Hey, we get Gravity and The Counselor in that time span. Cool it with your horrific accusations.
It's mind-boggling how much David People's has declined creatively. He wrote what arguably the best SF and Western movies: Unforgiven and Blade Runner, and then ended his career with Soldier. Boom.

Nothing at all. Except alien creatures, a character named Riddick (who is the same girl), and it's mostly underground.
Ned Stark?
The scene where he wakes up from being shot, looks at the part of his head peeled, off and then shrugs is amazing. Totally impossible in real life, but great.
Fast and Furious and The Pacifier were both after Pitch Black. He got those roles based on that movie.

One time I saw Superman Returns during a thunder storm. It almost drowned out the movie. Almost. Too bad.
I agree. Nothing beats story quality.
