That'll be their running joke.  Every season there's a severed head of a president.  Bonus points if they only use antebellum presidents.

Finally, someone thought of the children.

That's generally what I had always assumed.  That and Barlet had many powerful enemies in the state who, beyond serving their own interests wanted to bring down Barlet where they could.  But almost none of that was explicitly presented in the show.

The one really consistent thing that I've heard about acting / writing / comedy / show business in general is that the only way to get through it is to have a really thick skin and therefore be able to deal with the fact that, over the course of your career, you'll be rejected 50 times more often than you're accepted.

I could take or leave a lot of their guests (Eric Andre = meh, but Greg Proops = pretty entertaining), but Kulap and Howard have such great chemistry that it's always entertaining.  Two Charted is fantastic because of that.

I don't know if its on anything else, but there's a Doug Loves Movies from a while back (I think it was a TJ Miller and Pete Holmes one) where they do the "Dirty Brian Regan" character.
