I think you're asking a little bit more of You Don't Love Me Yet than it's in a position to deliver. It's a short and slight novel and intended as such. Lethem clearly was writing a book that wasn't a swing-for-the-fences Great American Novel a la Fortess of Solitude or Motherless Brooklyn.

If a short book could be the Great American Novel then it'd obviously be a compilation of letters to the Penthouse Forum.
