I was just posting about this too— I think he's extraordinarily good at conveying what the moment should feel like to his actors, and at coaching their instincts to the fore.  I also think that actors trust him in ways that they might not another director, maybe because he's so much on their emotional wavelength and…

I think it's often overlooked what a great "actor's director" Lynch is.  He draws performances out of people of an intensity that no one else seems able to.  He's kind of like Bergman in that regard.

I liked Lost in Translation a lot, and found Marie Antoinette reasonably enjoyable.  I never watched The Godfather III and honestly couldn't care less about it— I took it for granted it would be terrible.

Whatever one might think of Baumbach's movies, White's distaste seems pretty personal.  In one write-up he seemed to suggest that Baumbach's mother should have had an abortion.  Since White and said mother used to work at the same paper, I'm guessing there's more of a story here.

I'm pretty sure Lenny Bruce did telephone bits as well— at least many of his bits were the sort of one-sided conversations that Newhart and Berman did, though obviously in a quite different vein.

Accusing each other of stealing bits is standard stand-up behavior.  Berman was a gifted performer, but he was also a ferociously neurotic one who routinely sabotaged his own career.
