The odd thing about Newhart is that he's an excellent actor.  His standup really depended on his ability to channel ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances.  His touch was light and subtle, and completely untrained.

This, against much competition, is my favorite of Huston's movies.  There's so many beautiful moments— the story should have been impossible to capture on film, but Huston got so much of it to work.  He's arguably one of the best adapters of literature to screen ever.
