This, against much competition, is my favorite of Huston's movies.  There's so many beautiful moments— the story should have been impossible to capture on film, but Huston got so much of it to work.  He's arguably one of the best adapters of literature to screen ever.

Klaus Kinski would definitely be scandal-proof were he still alive.  Depravity was pretty much his specialty and he certainly enjoyed presenting himself in that light— he was our one true gnostic movie star.
