I think it's important to remember that all religions begin in a state of extremism— they wouldn't catch on otherwise.  Scientology's currently in its "cult" phase: thought control, disconnection, paranoia.  At a certain point either the cult fractures and softens into a religion, or burns out entirely like a failed…
