I like to think that learning the scientific principles behind electricity allowed many more firebenders to bend lightning, just like learning principles of physics improved people's understanding of martial arts.

Korra's missing a lot of useful skills.  She can't metalbend, she can't lightningbend, she can't bloodbend (sorry, Katarra, it might come in useful.  Apparently Aman used to it become a super ninja), and she can't blind earthbend.
