There are great movies and fun movies and clever little movies and bigassplosion movies, and there's room for all of them, as long as they're done sincerely, and I liked all of these movies for that reason. They were funny, smart, and humane.

I was looking at some early images of him, looking all cool and angular with his beaky schnoz and tousled hair, and started noticing how in so many of the pix he's clutching a smoke. What a fucking drag. He might have lived to 90 otherwise.

It's perfectly normal to mourn the loss of an artist whose work affected you strongly, especially one who was working at Updike's level for such a long time. It would seem weirder to read the obit, shrug, and move on to the next distraction.
