I've listened to eight years' worth of Brandon's Writing Excuses podcast, which also features two other Mormons (Dan Wells, and Howard Tayler of Schlock Mercenary) and I have never heard anything that sounded offensive or repugnant to me, as a fairly liberal (though privileged) guy.  I probably have similar prejudices…

I think it was good for white viewers to see a black family on TV that they could relate to and even aspire to be more like.  Some of us white folk really do need "black people are normal" pounded into our heads, especially if we live in all-white or mostly-white neighborhoods.
