To be fair, the fact that he has to "get the girl" is a bit heteronormative as well. Well it's not just that. Also, nobody cares about new characters.

It's also not JUST Takei. Pretty much every character except for Sulu is (more or less) identified as heterosexual in the original series. It's kind of hinted for Sulu, but I can see this working.
