Yes, I understand that. Seen the show several times. As mentioned, I was giving a hypothetical example to discuss the point of view that Douay-Rheims-Challoner had on the matter. Not actively looking to discuss matters of canon.

Yea, I think that's the scene that probably put the thought in their head (also a clever way to avoid the otherwise inevitable 'shipping of Saldana and Pine). But Spock isn't particularly convival. What if Nimoy was a racist, and was mad that his racist message was getting trampled on! Bet you wouldn't like that…
Kirk's always been a dickbag.
I'm going to kind of play devil's advocate here. Take a very similar thing that happened with the first movie: Uhura and Spock's relationship. The argument for it was "Well the show never said they WEREN'T together", which is kind of similar to how this is going (it's unlikely that Nero's incursion could have really…
Well on one hand he wouldn't "seem closeted". Sulu never expressed any interest in sex in the original series, so I don't see how that's relevant.
On the other hand, if Sulu played him as straight, than maybe that's "canon"?
To be fair, the fact that he has to "get the girl" is a bit heteronormative as well. I get why that's important in Asian representation, but what's to be said for Sulu being the only character who's settled down and supporting a family? He "got the guy", and there shouldn't really be something wrong with that.
Yea, I've been hyper aware of that recently after the Iron Fist is still a white guy hubbub when Max Landis pointed out "When was the last time you saw an Asian man have a romantic kiss in a Western-made movie?" and it kind of blew my mind.
So J. J. Abrams plays every character? I'd watch it.
I did some digging, because yea, that would be my only issue with this: If they're somehow implying that Nero's incursion made a 3 year-old Sulu gay.
He tries to save the "fair maiden" Uhura that one time when he's fencing in The Naked Time, but that means nothing. There IS a bunch of non-canon stuff in the…
"Homo Arigato" is definitely the most offensive thing I've thought today and I'm sorry to everyone.
Well he spawned Demora somehow.
I love that one of the most racist things that the original Star Trek did was a vicious Irish stereotype:

PING!
Bad driver?
Yea, that doesn't make sense. He's either gay/bi in both timelines or he's not.
Well it's not just that. Also, nobody cares about new characters.
It's also not JUST Takei. Pretty much every character except for Sulu is (more or less) identified as heterosexual in the original series. It's kind of hinted for Sulu, but I can see this working.
I thought his stand-up special "Critic's Choice" was really good.
Plus that belt death is my favorite in the series.
