Final week of the New Zealand Film Festival, including closing night film (and my film of the year so far) Holy Motors. I also saw Sleepless Night, Reality and the European cut of The Shining at the film festival, and Elephant and Pretty in Pink for my film class.

That soccer match was probably the funniest moment of the whole series to me. It really makes up for the rest of the episode, which I have to admit I didn't really remember until I was reading the review.

Your thoughts on The Dark Knight Rises are pretty similar to mine, though I liked it a bit more than you did. The thing that really bugs me about Nolan is that he actually made better movies before he achieved mainstream (read buzz-worthy, name recognised by everyone) success. Characterisation may not have ever been…

I don't think I quite got across what I meant above. You're right that it would be difficult to take expressionism too far, but my problem was more that it was too unsubtle with the contrast between bold colours and black-and-white. This was kind of indicative of how obvious the film was as a whole (especially in the…

I saw the final 10 minutes of the Chiefs game, and 3 of the rowing golds. At last I can finally stop being ashamed that I chose to support Waikato/The Chiefs despite growing up in Christchurch (My dad's from Hamilton, and it made sense at the time).

Second Week of the New Zealand Film Festival, and I was able to catch up with many films I had heard good things about over the year.

Bored to Death gets better in the second season as well.

I think the book for Follies takes far too much crap. Obviously it's not perfect, but the characters are actually very well-defined, and seeing as the narrative (like Company) is about character/s instead of a plot, that's very important. The one thing that doesn't quite seem to work is the ending.
