What song was the Dr. Phil reference in (my guess would be Ladies Who Lunch)?

I could definitely see liking Candide and West Side Story a lot if you weren't so much interested in musicals. I'm doing a composition degree, so I admire some of the tricks Bernstein uses, but I don't know about their appropriateness in musical theater. I think it might just be similar to the way I view Gershwin, in…

I was so excited for the Chiefs to be in the final, but unfortunately was unable to see the semi, and won't be able to see the final. Did you see the rowers break the world record in their heat?

I would actually recommend checking out his '70s work, probably starting with Sweeney Todd. This is largely because I don't like Lapine, and feel that he pushed Sondheim in a direction that is less story-telling and more vague symbols. Into the Woods is good, though I'm less sold on the second act, but I have a lot of…

The New Zealand International Film Festival is in town, and I lined up 15 movies to watch over the 17 days. My movie week started on Tuesday with The Silence of the Lambs, before the Festival opened on Friday. In the first few days of the festival I watched Beasts of the Southern Wild, Cabin in the Woods, Bernie and a…

That scene is one of my three all-time favourite Simpsons scenes. It's the British accent, and the lighting, that kill me every time.

Nitpicking time: Stanwyck's character isn't actually introduced with the ankle bracelet, but with a shot of her naked under a towel at the top of the stairs when Neff comes into the house.

The one thing that bugs me a bit about Jazz is that it only really covers things up to about 1965 in any detail. The final episode just sort of skims over the last 35 years (at that point) of Jazz history.
The problem is that the fight scenes either boiled down to crowd messiness or two big guys in body armour throwing punches at each other. It's not enough to know how to direct a good fight scene (which Nolan can't anyway), but you need to have good ideas for the fights as well.

I think it also helps that Niles is actually better characterised than Frasier by that point. Playing the same character for 20 years is going to result in a lot of Flanderisation (just like with Flanders).

That's exactly what makes the montage so hilarious - it's completely ridiculous, especially in the context of a multi-camera sitcom.
