That assumes that the reality in which our possible simulation exists follows the same rules as our "reality".

Basically, the idea is that if it is possible to simulate "reality" to the extent that we experience it, then simulated realities by our descendants or other alien civilizations will almost certainly vastly outnumber actual realities, so odds are we are simulated.
