I think the coda would have been great, even in a series finale.  It gives us just enough - we know the future is crap and that we're going on an adventure to fix it.  I would have wanted to know what the adventure was, of course, but it would have been a tantalizingly hopeful note to end on.

Now that is an interesting thought!
