D_Boons_Ghost You're instantly passionate because you're young. It makes for great reading, even when it verges on hubris, because you like the things you talk about. I imagine I would've had the same ten paragraph responses just a couple years ago.

While I appreciate our dearly departed Minuteman's enthusiasm for this discussion, it reeks of youthful exuberance. Jazz further exemplifies my "how do you quantify" quandary. How does one say LaFaro is "better" than Chambers?

One of my favorite bassists is Bruce Thomas of the Attractions. His work with Pete Thomas on This Years Model lays out EXACTLY how a hot rhythm section affects the song, the other musicians, etc. He's very melodic and fancy when he wants to be, but with meat and potato with the drums when it's called for.
