I've always thought mind control was the obvious answer to this question. It wasn't until very recently that I became concerned about what this might say about me as a person.
I've grown to accept how crazy I look listening to Comedy Bean Bag, actually I hate talking to strangers so it's nice in a way, nobody wants to start a conversation with the girl giggling at the tomatoes.
The Taking is basically the story of Noah's ark, but with space mold. I couldn't remember the name, so now "dean koontz fungus" is a term in my search history.

You're not alone.
I haven't seen the movie yet but the source material, at least, is worth a read. It's a batshit story, and I really wish another director had gotten to it first.
