"I remember every detail. The Germans wore gray, you wore blue."

No, mine's….Clarence?

@Prole Hole - why do you single out Peter Davison in your earlier comment about continuity? Do you mean Paul McGann? Or is there some weird element to the 5th Doctor's regeneration that I'm unaware of ? (That's entirely possible.)

I agree - as England actually have a decent manager, and will more than likely top their group, I can see them going through to the semis fairly comfortably. (Assuming Germany and Argentina win their groups, the toughest teams on the way are Ghana, and France with their bafflingly awful manager).

If you HAD to roll up any piece of land anywhere in the world and smoke it, Glastonbury would be your first choice, if you think about how many drugs of all varieties have probably been dropped in the mud over the years…

The whole of Animalympics is on YouTube. I don't remember anything about a two-headed fish, though. Are you sure you didn't dream that?

Most of my friends seem to think there's a special chemical ingredient in Stella that makes the imbiber more prone to violence (it's sometimes referred to as "loopy juice" in addition to the near-universal "wife-beater" nickname). I've never been sure why it's more to be feared than, say, Kronenbourg or Carlsberg.

Too true.

I went to a movie quiz recently where one of the rounds was ten F&T versions of movie themes. A Clockwork Orange was particularly hard to identify.

Yeah, I totally agree with Nathan on the lazy writing thing, but Adaptation is one of my favourite films. I think it's the exception because it's taken to such a ridiculous extreme, and because he's merciless in his portrayal of the fictional Charlie Kaufman.

I saw Iain Banks on a book tour years ago, and someone asked him which of his sci-fi novels he'd like to see made into a film. He said Consider Phlebas, basically because it would be the most spectacular-looking.

Arrested Development is probably the best modern screwball comedy - a plot about a formerly-rich family trying to cope with being poor, quckfire dialogue and blink-and-you'll-miss-them gags all feature. I only realised that it was screwball after reading about the common characteristics of the 30s movies - I think

I went to the pub from Withnail and I during its brief incarnation as "The Mother Blackcap". It's called something else now. A friend assures me that someone had carved "I fuck arses" into the wall of the urinal.

WOTW MOVIE SPOILER

I find it hard to disagree with that. And I've tried a few as well. Talisker or The Glenlivet run it close.

Rum Nation Demerara - the rum equivalent of a good single malt. Expensive, but worth it.

The "In the Loop" of 2010? Here's hoping.

I think with those Von Trier films it really depends on which you saw first. I liked Dancer in the Dark more than Breaking the Waves, but it probably would have been the other way around if I'd seen Breaking the Waves first. While the stories are different (as are those of the Idiots and Dogville), I think you get

Yes, that was basically how it went.

As someone British who's attended his lectures, I'd say "condescending" might be a bit strong, but "patronising" is pretty much on the money. He's probably completely unaware of it, but there it is.
