The thing with Girl Talk is that it's all fairly contemporary stuff. Most artists these days are fine with sampling as it's part of music culture now. But getting samples off the Beatles or the Eagles? Near impossible, I'd think.

Heavens Above! is a surprisingly touching class comedy from the early 60s, and one of his straightest roles. Well worth checking out.

Finally, one I can brag about. I saw them after the release of their first album, so obviously they played most of the material from the three EPs. Top stuff.

The news a few months ago was that they were getting together in a rehearsal space to play a bit and see how it went. Since Ronnie Wood is going to be going through a very expensive divorce in the near future I'm guessing he'd definitely be up for a lucrative tour…

Rosita's second and last single "Santa Poca's Dream" was actually really good. Hmmm, maybe it's better that they quit while they were ahead.

@scotteb

I could have just checked imdb, of course. But that would have been too easy. You guys are right, apparently the original twist is backstory.

Yeah Pilgrim, when I think a friend will really like something I just suggest they check it out, rather than insist they watch/listen to/read it, so they don't have that weight of expectation going in. Of course this backfires when they say they'll get round to it, but never do, because I haven't really talked it up…

I'd suggest cutting people who didn't like This Is Spinal Tap a little slack if they've only seen it once. Because it's filmed in a naturalistic way you can miss a lot of the comedy the first time around - on repeat viewings, when you know a bit about what's coming, you not only have the time to laugh at the stuff

'Tis true it's a small country full of musicians, though. Thom Yorke used to keep turning up at Tesco's whenever I went there back in 1998. I'm pretty sure he was stalking me. When I moved to North London it was Chris Martin for a while. Now it's just ex-members of Kenickie (and not even Lauren Laverne, sadly).

The comment that "even people who don't like musicals like Singin' in the Rain" is interesting. I'm a subscriber to the "80% of any given genre is rubbish" theory, but I think that the tolerability of that 80% varies from genre to genre. A bad horror or sci-fi can actually be enjoyable. A bad musical is excruciating.

Sensei, that's my favourite line from Casablanca too.

I'm going to jump on the I hate Grease bandwagon, but a very specific element: Every really bad party DJ I've encountered in the last 15 years, from university through to weddings, has played the "Grease Megamix" at some point in their set. Why play one annoying song from that movie, when you can play 30 seconds from

I don't think I'm making any outrageous claims by saying that The Departed, while good, is not Martin Scorsese's best film. So don't worry about it Rando, it's fairly meaningless.

A friend of mine named a cat "Bowel Cancer - the silent killer". I'm afraid I don't know what became of it.

Karatloz, your last two sentences should read: "This person is a fucking moron. Probably Tom Hanks."

And agreed the Danger Man (apparently known as Secret Agent in the US) theme was top:
