From the linked article
"The deal reteams the filmmaker with the studio, for whom he made the upcoming crime caper "RocknRolla." Warners is said to be high on the movie, which is being released in October."

Note the phrase "enhanced with CGI" - he's not totally opposed. I've always thought it works best when it's used to clean things up (like taking wires out of the shot), rather than when it's used to create something from scratch.

CGI
A quote from Guillermo del Toro:
"The only thing I will be pushing for more in these films than the other three, are full animatronics and animatronic creatures enhanced with CGI, as opposed to CGI creatures themselves"

"I just kept thinking, 'But you can't act'."

I always thought Omar Sharif's entrance in Lawrence of Arabia was very reminiscent of Sergio Leone - although it came out two years before A Fistful of Dollars, so I'm guessing Leone watched that film a good few times.

I'm with HM's FLC. At the time I hated, hated, hated Oasis, but their continuing mediocrity really puts the lie to the ridiculous hyperbole of the new Beatlemania, and is the best outcome I could hope for. God help us if they'd split up in 1996.

Yeah, I think there's probably a difference in reaction between people who don't know what the invention is going to turn out to be, like Doc Metropolis, and people who do, like I did. The build-up would be worth it for the thrill of that realisation, but I was drumming my fingers through the first twenty minutes or

This is a very good description of how I felt watching this film. I feel that towards the end, Carruth was trying to shoehorn in all the answers to the question "What would you really do if you had a time machine?" he could think of, so that some plot strands (especially the party) seemed a bit inconsequential.

Irn Bru tastes, unsurprisingly, of metal. It is one of the best hangover cures there are, because its utterly alien taste is able to fool the body into not automatically throwing it up again - letting the caffeine and sugar get to work on the pain. It has been marketed to some success in Russia on this basis.

Ah, the sellout question is probably more relevant now than ever. At least back in the early 90s Green Day and Nirvana had the excuse that without a major deal they couldn't make their music available to everyone that might want to hear it.

I've heard that a lot of heavy metal fans get into classical music as they get older. It makes sense, they probably have more in common with Wagner and Beethoven than with most contemporary musicians.

We hate it when our bands become successful
If there are enough decent bands in a particular style of music, it will become popular enough to be co-opted by the mainstream. Then record companies will start marketing safer, blander versions of the original decent bands, because they will make more money.
This isn't

Oh, right, *them*. Although Maconie's not bad when he's talking about music you've never heard of. Still, that sort of thing is horribly predictable - in ten years time, it will all be about the Smiths. You just have to tune it out.
Personally, I love the Beatles, Bowie and the Smiths. The Pistols are OK, too. But

Jasper, let's not forget that we all (in the UK) had the Beatles shoved down our throats during the Britpop era, so it's not surprising if ten years later the kids are not so wild about them. And since they were chiefly assoiciated with Oasis, who can blame them?

This is the perfect comment thread…
…for an article about prog rock.

The Vanishing and Funny Games. Both remade in English by their original directors.

Having said that, the inclusion of Harvey Dent as a major character in The Dark Knight is a bit of a give-away of which villain might appear in a third film. I believe the rumour was the Joker would be involved in the set-up for that, but I guess it can be re-written or just shot in such a way that a new actor isn't

Haven't seen it for several years, but as soon as I saw that subject line, it reminded me that I thought there was something odd about the ending of the film. That's exactly it.
